To women everywhere...Happy Mother’s Day to all the beautiful women in my life, including my own mother! I know that for most women this is a bitter-sweet holiday, but I wish you all, from the bottom of my heart, a beautiful weekend filled with light and love. I’ve always associated the word ‘motherhood’ with creation. For me, to mother means to create. The most obvious example are my three beautiful daughters. For a small moment in time, I was able to become more infinite and eternal, less mortal, and create another human being…k so I may have had a little help :) But I look at my little girls and I see something bigger than myself. However, through different circumstances, this specific opportunity for creation is not available to all women in this life and so I’ve broadened my definition and have come to believe that to mother means to create light. Maybe not so much when they’re in time-out for whacking each other with sticks and rocks, but it always comes back pretty quickly :) It’s as if my spirit within recognizes their divine spirit. But there are so many other opportunities to spread light as well. Even before I had children, I created light when a roommate or coworker felt like they could come and confide in me. I created light serving as a representative of my church and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the amazing people of Berlin, Germany. I’ve felt this light as I’ve traveled and learned about other cultures, religions, histories, and peoples. I see this light in others as they serve the needy, the poor, the homeless, the refugees, or the neighbor next door. I feel this light and warmth spread through me, when someone recognizes my needs and reaches out to lift and support. I know this light can be in the darkest of places, where loved ones struggle with mental or emotional health and we are there for them. Basically, this light is love and if love is light, and creating light is motherhood, then to mother is to love. This weekend, allow the sweetness of all things that are woman and motherhood to fill your heart as you reach out and love. I challenge you to share your light and love at the gym, the store, with the obnoxious neighbor kids, in your work, or in your home. Know that your love doesn’t have to be defined by one single definition of creation. Our God above will take all our efforts to create and magnify them. I’ve felt this divine magnification as I’ve baked cakes, styled hair, designed flowers, washed the dishes, wiped poop off of walls, kissed boo-boos, and a hundred other things I do every day to show my family, friends, and clients that I love them. And God will do the same for you when you share your light fearlessly. I share my light this weekend in the hopes that it will give you the courage to share yours. If you hide your light because you are afraid someone else’s light may shine brighter, the world will be a darker place because of it. Every woman has a light to share. Let’s brighten the hearts and homes around us and #sharethelight.
